Monthly Insider Guide

June in Fresno

Summer heat settles in. Start early, or head for the mountains.

June Weather

97°F / 64°F

Hot and dry. Triple digits show up by late June. Mornings before 9am and evenings after 7pm are the comfortable windows.

June is when the Central Valley heat sets in. Afternoons in Fresno run well into the 90s and often hit triple digits, so the day splits into a cool morning, a hot middle, and a long warm evening. Plan around it. Hike at sunrise, drive up to the Sierra when you have a full day, and save the evenings for baseball, markets, and music.

Early-Morning Hikes and Walks

June hiking near Fresno means starting at first light. By mid morning the exposed trails are too hot, so the people who go early get the place to themselves. Carry more water than you think you need.

Lewis S. Eaton Trail

Easy, pavedWoodward Park / San Joaquin River Parkway, North Fresno

The Eaton Trail runs along the bluffs above the San Joaquin River on the north edge of Fresno. It is paved, mostly flat, and easy to do before work or before the heat. Start near Woodward Park and go as far as you want, since the path connects into the wider San Joaquin River Parkway.

Insider Tip

The stretch closest to the river holds shade and a few degrees of cool the longest. Park at Woodward Park and head down toward the water first.

San Joaquin River Gorge

Moderate, some climbingBLM San Joaquin River Gorge, Auberry

About 45 minutes northeast of Fresno near Auberry, the San Joaquin River Gorge has real trails that drop through oak woodland to the river and a footbridge across it. The elevation is a little higher than the valley floor, so mornings are cooler than in town. Go early and turn around before the climb out gets hot.

Woodward Park

Easy7775 Friant Rd, Fresno

Woodward Park is the big regional park in north Fresno, with shaded paths, a bird sanctuary, and the Shinzen Japanese Garden. Gates open early and the loops are popular with walkers and runners before the heat. It is the easy option when you want to be outside without driving out of town.

Head for the Water

When the valley bakes, everyone within range goes looking for water. By June the lakes and the river are the obvious move.

Millerton Lake

Millerton Lake State Recreation Area, Friant

Millerton Lake sits behind Friant Dam about 30 minutes northeast of Fresno. It is the closest real swimming and boating to town, with beaches, boat ramps, and fishing. Weekends fill up fast, so go on a weekday or arrive early and claim shade.

Lost Lake Recreation Area

Lost Lake Recreation Area, Friant

Just below Friant Dam, Lost Lake is a shaded county park along the San Joaquin River. It is cooler by the water than out in the open, with picnic spots and river access. It is a low-key alternative when the lake itself is crowded.

City Pools and Splash Pads

Various locations around Fresno

Fresno runs public pools and free splash pads through the summer, which are the easy answer for families on a hot afternoon. Locations and open days change year to year, so check the Fresno PARCS schedule before you load up the car.

Escape to the Sierra

Fresno's best summer trick is that the mountains are close. An hour up Highway 168 puts you 15 to 20 degrees cooler, in pine forest instead of valley heat.

Shaver Lake

Shaver Lake, Highway 168

Shaver Lake is the classic Fresno summer escape, about an hour up Highway 168 at around 5,400 feet. The water is good for swimming, boating, and paddleboarding, and the small town has food and rentals. A day trip is enough to reset after a hot week in the valley.

Insider Tip

Highway 168 backs up on Sunday afternoons when everyone drives down at once. Leave the lake before 3pm or wait until after 6pm.

Huntington Lake

Huntington Lake, Highway 168

Another 45 minutes past Shaver at about 7,000 feet, Huntington Lake is cooler still and known for sailing. It is a longer drive and a bigger commitment, better suited to a full day or an overnight at one of the campgrounds.

Bass Lake

Bass Lake, near Oakhurst

Bass Lake sits about an hour north toward Oakhurst, on the way to Yosemite's south entrance. It is warmer and lower than the Highway 168 lakes, with boat rentals and lakeside food. Pair it with a Yosemite day if you want to make the drive count.

Indoor Escapes

The middle of a June day in Fresno is for air conditioning. A few places are worth the trip beyond sitting at home.

Maya Cinemas

Downtown Fresno

The Maya theater on Fulton Street is the easy midday move. Catch a matinee during the hottest hours and keep your outdoor plans for morning and evening. It anchors the redone downtown stretch, so you can grab food nearby.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo

894 W Belmont Ave, Roeding Park, Fresno

The zoo in Roeding Park is best right at opening, before the animals and the visitors both wear down in the heat. The African Adventure and Sea Lion Cove are the highlights. Go early, then plan to leave by midday.

Fashion Fair and River Park

Central and North Fresno

When you just need cool air, Fashion Fair is the enclosed mall in central Fresno and River Park is the open-air center to the north with shops, restaurants, and a theater. Neither is a destination on its own, but both beat the afternoon heat.

June Events

June events in Fresno wait for the evening, when the heat lets go and the valley is finally pleasant.

Fresno Grizzlies Baseball

Chukchansi Park, 1800 Tulare St, Fresno

The Grizzlies play Triple-A ball at Chukchansi Park downtown all summer, and a warm June evening at the ballpark is one of the better cheap nights out in town. Friday home games usually end with fireworks. Check the schedule for the current homestand.

Old Town Clovis Farmers Market

Pollasky Ave, Old Town Clovis

On Friday evenings through the summer, Old Town Clovis closes the street for a farmers market with produce, food vendors, and live music. It is a Fresno area institution and a good way to spend a warm evening. It runs from late spring into early fall.
